This book stressed me out in the best way possible. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead had me on the edge of my seat the whole book.
Given the title, you know the book is about folks escaping slavery. In my naive mind (probably planted by some whitewashed education) I thought it went like this: 1: Find Underground Railroad 2: Escape to the railroad 3: Freedom.
No. That’s not how it goes. This is a work of fiction, but it also bleeds with harsh realities of slavery in our country.
This book broke my heart again and again but also had beautiful redemption stories. The way Whitehead writes gives you a beautiful plot with breaks to breathe. I absolutely loved the way this book was written.
After reading this, and The Nickel Boys, I want to read everything he has written.
