I flew through this book because I couldn’t wait to know what happened next. Told over about 30 years, the book follows a set of light-skinned Black twins in a small southern town.
When they leave the town at 16, one continues to live as a Black woman, the other disappears and lives her life passing as white. The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett follows both Stella and Desiree and what life looks like for them.
I found this concept incredibly interesting and I loved the characters. There’s twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the book. There were a few times where I got confused because of some time jumping, but it didn’t stop me from understanding what was going on.
This is Brit Bennett’s second book, and I’d like to go back and read her debut novel The Mothers sometime soon.
