The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah has been on my list for years. I think my book club even read it a few years ago, but I skipped it. For some reason I had it pigeonholed as a romance book and that made me think “nah.”
Though it does have a love story, that is not the main focus of this book. As a big fan of World War II historical fiction, I’m glad I finally picked this up.
The book centers on a family in France who have had their ups and downs even before a war invades their country. Each member reacts to the war a little differently which only adds to the rifts between them.
I don’t want to say much more because I don’t want to give away the plot, but this is a book that breaks my heart but does so in a beautiful way that had me engrossed in this story. It took a little while to fully draw me into the story, but after that I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this book.
